How Menopause Changes Your Skin (and How to Care)
By Liza Truter · 28 July 2026 · 5 min read
You catch yourself in the bathroom mirror and think, when did my skin start doing this? It feels drier than it used to, a little thinner, maybe crepey around the eyes. Some mornings it's tight, some weeks you're breaking out like a teenager, and a cream you've used happily for years suddenly stings. If you're somewhere in your forties or fifties and quietly wondering what's going on, let me put your mind at ease straight away: this is normal, it isn't your fault, and you haven't done anything wrong.
I'm not a doctor — I'm just a woman a step or two ahead of you on the same road, and I've felt every one of these changes myself. So let's talk plainly about why menopause and perimenopause change your skin, and what genuinely helps.
It all comes back to one little hormone
The short version: oestrogen. Through most of your life, this hormone quietly keeps your skin plump, moist and springy behind the scenes. As you move through perimenopause and into menopause, your oestrogen levels drop — and because your skin has lots of little "receivers" for it, your skin feels that dip more than almost any other part of you.
When oestrogen falls, three things happen at once: your skin makes less collagen (the scaffolding that keeps you firm), holds less water, and produces less natural oil. That single hormone shift is behind nearly every change you're noticing. Once you know that, none of it feels quite so random.
The dryness that seemed to appear overnight
This is usually the first thing women mention. Skin that was normal, even a bit oily, suddenly feels parched, flaky or tight — especially on the cheeks, and worst in winter or after a hot shower.
It happens because you're making less oil and holding less water, so your skin's protective barrier gets weaker and moisture escapes more easily. The fix isn't to scrub harder or use something "stronger" — that only strips you further. Your skin now needs gentle cleansing and proper, layered hydration. (If you've ever wondered whether your skin is dry or dehydrated — they're not the same thing — my piece on dry skin vs dehydrated skin breaks it down simply.)
Losing a bit of firmness and bounce
That softer jawline, the fine lines that seem to arrive faster, the skin on your neck that feels a little looser — this is the collagen story. We lose a meaningful chunk of our skin's collagen in the first few years around menopause, and collagen is exactly what keeps us looking lifted and firm.
Nothing turns back the clock completely, and anyone promising that isn't being honest with you. But you can support your skin, protect the collagen you have, and keep it as strong and springy as possible. I've written more about the tell-tale signs your skin is losing collagen if you want to understand what's really going on there.
Breakouts — at this age? Really?
Yes, and it catches so many of us off guard. Just when the dryness arrives, spots turn up too, often along the chin and jaw. It feels deeply unfair to fight teenage skin and ageing skin in the same week.
The reason is balance: as oestrogen falls, the ratio of your other hormones shifts, and that can nudge your oil glands into little flare-ups. The instinct is to attack it with harsh, drying products — but that makes the dryness and sensitivity worse and sets off a frustrating cycle. Gentle and consistent wins here, not aggressive.
Skin that's suddenly touchy
If products that never bothered you now sting, redden or itch, that's the weakened barrier again. Thinner, drier skin simply has less of a buffer, so it reacts more. This is your cue to simplify, soothe, and go fragrance-light — not to keep pushing through.
What genuinely helps (and most of it is free)
Before any product, these everyday habits do a lot of the heavy lifting:
- Be gentle. Lukewarm water, no scrubbing, pat dry. Treat your skin like fine fabric, not a pot to scour.
- Hydrate in layers. A watery hydrating step under a richer cream holds moisture in far better than one heavy cream alone.
- Wear sunscreen every single day. This is the biggest one. Sun damage speeds up collagen loss, so daily SPF is genuinely the most powerful anti-ageing step you have — more on that in does sunscreen prevent wrinkles.
- Support from the inside. Water, sleep, protein and gentle movement all show up on your face eventually.
- Give it time. Skin rewards consistency over weeks, not overnight miracles.
Where a little extra support fits in
Once you've got the gentle basics right, this is the stage where a well-matched, hydrating and firming range can be a real comfort — and where Avroy Shlain's CRT range was made for exactly this season of skin. It leans on hydration and firming ingredients your changing skin is crying out for: hyaluronic acid to draw water back in, plus vitamins to support tone and firmness.
You don't need the whole shelf. Many women start with just the 3-in-1 Hydration Serum for that thirsty, tight feeling, and add the Youth Gel or Firming Face & Neck Cream when loss of firmness is the main worry. A little goes a long way, so a bottle genuinely lasts months. Start with your biggest concern and build slowly.
And please — see your doctor for anything medical
I'll always be honest with you: skincare cares for your skin, but it can't treat menopause. If hot flushes, mood, sleep or your cycle are troubling you, or if any skin change looks unusual or won't settle, please book a proper check-up. There's real, kind help available, and you deserve it.
This season is a lot. But your skin isn't failing you — it's just asking for a gentler, more thoughtful kind of care. And that, you absolutely can give it. 💛
