Why Wrinkles Appear Faster After 40 (And What Helps)
By Liza Truter · 28 July 2026 · 5 min read
You catch yourself in the car mirror, or in a photo someone took without warning, and there they are — lines that weren't quite so obvious last year. And you think: where did those come from, and why so suddenly?
I've had that exact moment. For years my skin ticked along and I barely thought about it. Then somewhere around forty, things seemed to change almost overnight. If that's you right now, I want you to know two things straight away: you haven't done anything wrong, and it isn't too late to help your skin. Let me walk you through what's actually going on, because once you understand the why, the what to do gets so much simpler.
It's not sudden — it's just becoming visible
Here's the first bit of reassurance. Wrinkles don't really appear overnight. What changes after 40 is that the slow, quiet stuff finally shows up on the surface. Three things tend to happen around the same time, which is why it can feel like it all landed in one year.
1. Collagen quietly steps back
Collagen is the springy scaffolding under your skin — it's what keeps everything plump, firm and bouncing back. From our mid-twenties we gradually make a little less of it each year. That's completely normal, and for a long time you'd never notice.
But around perimenopause, oestrogen begins to dip, and oestrogen is closely tied to how much collagen we hold onto. So the decline speeds up. With less scaffolding underneath, skin that used to spring back now creases and stays creased a little longer — first thing in the morning, or after a night on your side. If you want to spot this earlier next time, I've written more about the signs your skin is losing collagen.
2. Your skin makes less of its own oil and moisture
This is the one nobody warns you about. Those same hormone shifts mean your skin produces less oil and holds onto less water than it did in your thirties. So even if you were a bit shiny for years, you may now feel tight, papery or flaky by mid-afternoon.
Why does that matter for wrinkles? Because well-hydrated, cushioned skin looks smoother and lines look softer. Drier skin does the opposite — every little crease is more obvious. It's a bit like the difference between a plumped-up cushion and one that's gone flat. (If your skin feels tight rather than genuinely oil-dry, it's worth knowing the difference between dry skin and dehydrated skin — they need different help.)
3. Your sun history is catching up
Here's the honest one. Most of the deeper lines and uneven patches we notice after 40 aren't really about turning 40 — they're the sum of every sunny braai, beach day and school run from the past few decades. Here in South Africa our sun is fierce, and most of us grew up long before daily SPF was a thing.
The good news hidden in that: sun damage is the most preventable cause of ageing. You can't undo the past, but you can absolutely stop adding to it from today. Protecting your skin now is honestly the single highest-value thing you can do — I've explained exactly how in does sunscreen prevent wrinkles.
So what actually helps? (The free part first)
Before you spend a cent, these make a real difference:
- Consistency beats intensity. Skin rewards the routine you actually keep, not the fancy one you do twice and abandon. Five gentle minutes, morning and night, every day, will always out-perform a big splurge you can't stick to.
- Wear sun protection daily — yes, even in winter, even when it's cloudy, even indoors near a window. This is non-negotiable if wrinkles are your worry.
- Don't strip your skin. Harsh, squeaky-clean cleansers make dryness and fine lines look worse. Gentle is the goal.
- Support it from the inside too — water, sleep, and going easy on yourself. Stress shows up on your face faster after 40, I promise you.
Where the right products genuinely earn their place
Free habits do the heavy lifting, but two things can give your skin real, targeted help — and this is where I'll gently point you to what I use and trust.
First, a retinol-type active (a Vitamin A derivative). This is one of the few ingredients with proper science behind it for softening fine lines, because it encourages your skin to renew and behave a little younger. In the Avroy Shlain CRT range, the Anti-Wrinkle Serum is the one made exactly for this — a few drops after cleansing, morning and night, clinically shown to soften fine lines and wrinkles over four weeks. A little goes a very long way, so one bottle lasts months.
Second, and just as important, your daytime protect step. The CRT Anti-Wrinkle Plumping Day Cream SPF 25 does two jobs in one: it plumps and hydrates that thirstier, drier skin and shields it from the sun that caused so much of this in the first place. Treating at night, protecting by day — that's the whole rhythm, and it's a genuinely lovely one to settle into.
You don't need the entire shelf. Cleanse gently, treat the concern, protect in the daytime. That's it.
A last, honest word
Lines aren't a failure. They're proof you've laughed, squinted at beautiful views and lived a whole life. The goal was never to erase them — it's to keep your skin comfortable, cared for and looking like a rested version of you. Be patient and be kind to yourself; skin changes slowly, in both directions. Give it a few consistent weeks before you judge the results.
